Ahrefs Alternatives: Tools for Backlinks, Keywords, and Content

The best Ahrefs alternatives depend on which Ahrefs job you need to replace. Choose SE Ranking or Semrush for an agency suite, Majestic or Moz Pro for links, Mangools or Keywords Everywhere for cheap keyword data, AccuRanker for tracking and Clearscope for content.

Ahrefs Alternatives: Tools for Backlinks, Keywords, and Content

TL;DR: which Ahrefs alternative should you pick?

Pick the tool that replaces the Ahrefs job you actually pay for, because no single alternative wins them all. SE Ranking is our top pick for most small agencies, and Semrush is the pick if breadth matters more than cost.

  • Best agency suite for the money: SE Ranking Growth, with 30 projects, 5,000 daily keywords and three seats at $279 a month.
  • Broadest suite: Semrush, from $139 a month, with daily tracking and its own backlink crawler.
  • Link specialists: Majestic Pro at $99.99 a month, or Moz Pro if you want links inside a lighter suite.
  • Cheap keyword data: Keywords Everywhere at $84 a year, or Mangools from $37.70 a month billed annually.
  • One gap only: AccuRanker for daily ranks, or Clearscope or another of the content optimizers in our Surfer SEO alternatives guide for briefs.

What does Ahrefs still do well?

Ahrefs remains a strong choice for link and competitive research, because it runs on its own crawler and web index. If link work is daily, billable work, keep it and add a specialist rather than switching.

The pricing page lists Lite at $129, Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449 a month, with up to 17% off annually (checked 8 November 2026). Every plan gets unlimited verified projects. Our Semrush vs Ahrefs workflow comparison shows where each suite is stronger.

  • Best for: teams whose main job is link research and competitor analysis.
  • Skip it if: you need daily rankings, or you work across more unverified client sites than your plan allows.

Why do teams look beyond Ahrefs?

The usual triggers are weekly rank tracking, per-user costs, user caps and short history on the entry tier. Each one comes from Ahrefs' own published plan limits.

How did we choose the alternatives?

Each tool had to replace at least one Ahrefs job and publish its plans and limits on an official page. We compared backlink data, keyword limits, rank tracking and seat costs, and grouped tools by job.

No vendor paid for placement, and no hands-on testing was performed. Every figure comes from the vendor's own site, fetched on 8 November 2026. Our picks are editorial judgment based on those published limits.

How do the alternatives compare by job?

Semrush and SE Ranking replace the most Ahrefs jobs at once, while the rest each replace one or two. Read across the row for the job you care about, not the price alone.

Which tools replace Keywords Explorer on a budget?

Keywords Everywhere is the cheapest route to keyword metrics, and Mangools is the better pick if you also want tracking and link lookups. Neither replaces Ahrefs for a busy agency.

Mangools: best for freelancers and small sites

Best for: people who mostly used Ahrefs for keyword discovery. Basic, Premium and Agency cost $37.70, $52.70 and $97.70 a month billed annually (checked 8 November 2026). Monthly billing costs more, so confirm that rate on the same page.

Skip it if: you need daily ranks below the Agency plan, or a team on Basic. Basic has no extra seats, and the FAQ says sub-users share the parent account's limits (checked 8 November 2026).

Keywords Everywhere: best for writers researching in the browser

Best for: writers and solo marketers who want metrics beside search results. Plans are annual only: Bronze at $84 a year for 100,000 credits and one seat, Silver at $168 for 400,000 credits and three seats (checked 8 November 2026).

Skip it if: you need projects, audits or rank tracking. For more choices, see the keyword research tool shortlist for agencies.

Which all-in-one suites suit agencies leaving Ahrefs?

SE Ranking is our pick for most small agencies because it gives the most projects, keywords and seats for the money. Semrush is the better buy if you want the broader toolset and accept higher per-user costs.

SE Ranking: best for capacity per dollar

Best for: small agencies. Core is $129 a month with 10 projects, one seat and 2,000 daily keywords; Growth is $279 with 30 projects, three seats and 5,000 keywords (checked 8 November 2026). Annual billing drops those to $103.20 and $223.20 a month.

Extra seats start from $16. The 14-day trial needs no card but caps tracking at 750 keywords. Annual plans include free assisted migration, and ranking history can be imported.

Skip it if: you need white-label reports on monthly billing, because the Agency Pack adds from $69 a month and is annual only (checked 8 November 2026).

Semrush: best for breadth and daily tracking

Best for: agencies that want research, tracking and AI visibility together. Semrush lists SEO at $139, Starter at $199 and Pro+ at $299 a month, or $117.33, $165.17 and $248.17 billed annually (checked 8 November 2026). SEO and Starter cover 5 websites and 500 keywords; Pro+ covers 15 and 1,500.

It also describes a proprietary backlink crawler and a database of over 43 trillion backlinks (checked 8 November 2026), a vendor figure we haven't verified independently.

Skip it if: you manage many small client sites on a tight budget. Extra users cost $45 on Starter and $80 on Pro+, plus $99 each for AI Visibility access (checked 8 November 2026). Our Semrush alternatives guide covers the reverse move.

What if you only need rank tracking or content help?

Keep Ahrefs for research and add one specialist: AccuRanker for faster rankings, or Clearscope for briefs and drafts. That adds a subscription, so it only pays if the gap costs you client time.

AccuRanker: best for agencies needing daily and on-demand rankings

Best for: teams that find weekly updates too slow. The help center lists 24-hour updates plus on-demand refreshes, and the pricing page starts Professional at $269 a month for 2,000 keywords, with unlimited users and up to 15% off annually (checked 8 November 2026).

Skip it if: monthly reporting on stable sites is your rhythm. Our rank tracker comparison for multi-client SEO lists other options.

Clearscope: best for content teams grading drafts

Best for: teams that want content guidance inside the writing workflow. Clearscope lists Essentials at $129 a month with unlimited users, 20 monthly drafts and 50 tracked queries, plus a 14-day free trial (checked 8 November 2026).

Skip it if: you need link data or keyword research at Ahrefs' depth. See our content optimization tools guide for alternatives.

How do seat costs compare for a three-person team?

For a hypothetical three-person team on monthly billing, Ahrefs Lite costs up to $209, Moz Pro Medium $228, SE Ranking Growth $279 and Semrush Starter $289 a month. SE Ranking gives the most capacity of the four, so the lowest bill is not the best fit.

Assumptions: monthly list prices checked 8 November 2026, no add-ons, tax excluded. These are our calculations, not quotes.

  • Ahrefs Lite: $129 plus two users at $40 is $209, or $169 if both stay casual at $20. It allows 5 unverified projects.
  • Moz Pro Medium: $179 with two users, plus one seat at $49, is $228 for 10 sites.
  • SE Ranking Growth: $279 with three seats and 30 projects included.
  • Semrush Starter: $199 plus two users at $45 is $289 for 5 websites. Pro+ with two users at $80 is $459 for 15.

Our guide to building an SEO stack without duplicate features helps decide who really needs a full seat.

Is another link index as good as Ahrefs' data?

No index matches another exactly, and vendor pages cannot settle which is better for you. The only fair comparison is on domains whose link profiles you already know well.

Compare referring domains and new links for the same period, not total backlinks. Vendors count and retain links differently, so raw totals mislead. Majestic's Fresh Index covers links seen in the past 120 days (checked 8 November 2026), for example.

What should a transition checklist include?

Export everything Ahrefs holds that you cannot regenerate, then run the new tool alongside it for one reporting cycle. Do it before your plan lapses, because access drops to the free tier afterward.

  1. List which Ahrefs reports each team member used in the last 90 days.
  2. Export tracked keywords, ranking history, keyword lists and link prospect lists.
  3. Download recent site audit results as a baseline for the new crawler.
  4. Record current client metrics, because new metrics will differ.
  5. Rebuild client report templates before the first client-facing report.
  6. Cancel before renewal: Ahrefs says it does not issue refunds in general, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the period (checked 8 November 2026).

If prospect lists move into outreach, our compliant B2B outreach stack guide covers consent rules.

What else do buyers ask about replacing Ahrefs?

Buyers mostly ask about link data, cheaper Ahrefs tiers and whether one tool can do everything. Short answers follow.

Which tool has backlink data closest to Ahrefs?

Semrush is the closest suite option because it runs its own backlink crawler and database, and Majestic is the closest link-only option. Every index finds a different subset of the web, so cross-check domains you know before deciding.

Is there a cheaper option without leaving Ahrefs?

Yes. Ahrefs lists a $29-a-month Starter plan and a free account, Ahrefs Free, both checked 8 November 2026. Both are much narrower than Lite, and Starter can't add users.

Can one tool replace every Ahrefs job?

Semrush and SE Ranking come closest, with different strengths. If either leaves a gap, add one specialist rather than a second suite.

Does weekly rank tracking matter?

It matters if you react to daily volatility or promise clients frequent updates. For monthly reporting on stable sites, weekly data is usually enough.

Does Ahrefs offer a free trial?

No. Its help center says it provides no free trials, so the free account is the only no-cost way in. SE Ranking, Clearscope, Moz and Semrush all advertise a free trial or free start on their pricing pages.

What's the verdict?

Choose SE Ranking if you want one suite for a small agency, Semrush if you want more breadth, and a specialist if only one job is failing you. Stay on Ahrefs if link research is your core billable work.

Start with the official trial or free plan where one exists, using real client domains. For a wider shortlist, see the SEO software guide for agencies and in-house teams or browse the SEO software category.
